Truck crushes man in car

Bloemfontein - A 40-year-old man was killed after a head-on collision on the N8 near Ladybrand on Saturday evening, Free State paramedics said.

The man was driving a VW Polo that collided shortly after 19:00 with a truck returning to Bloemfontein after dropping off its cargo in Lesotho, said ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson in a statement.

The accident happened about 15km outside Ladybrand at Hobhouse crossing.

"Once the paramedics arrived on scene, they found a VW Polo to have been so badly crushed in from the driver's side from the impact with the truck, that the width of the vehicle was reduced to less than half of what it had been," Jackson said.

The man died on the scene.

The damage to the driver side was so severe, emergency workers had to use the jaws of life on the passenger side door to remove the man's remains.

The driver of the truck was not injured in the accident.

What are you on about? - 2012-10-28 08:03

Are you OK ? Babalas from last night ?

      kobus.swart.75 - 2012-10-28 08:06

Khethu, what are you saying? Are you saying it's WV and not VW? Next time you walk past a VolksWagen, check it out. Condolences to the family of the man who was lost in the accident.

      khethu.ndlovu.3 - 2012-10-28 08:29

Kobus, thanx man, it was a slip of the pen, or should i say finger? The point here is i dont see any need for mentioning the names of cars when reporting on an accident, a car is enough. Why didnt they mention the name of the truck if names were important here?

      hein.helmand - 2012-10-28 08:32

Maybe he means wery vast=WV. 80% matric pass. ;-)

      joe.smit.549 - 2012-10-28 08:41

      Agreed. Totally irrelevant.

      khethu.ndlovu.3 - 2012-10-28 09:54

@helmand, thanks man, if you think so.

Tragedies like this happen all too often. The attitude of the drivers on our roads HAS TO CHANGE! We all need to practice safe driving, tolerance and respect for others on our roads. The state of some our roads also doesn't help!

It's just shocking how many lorries are involved in accidents these days! Something needs to be done about it...justs wonder whose fault it was. Feel so sorry for the VW driver's family...shocking.

VW owners drive kk on the road and forget that their toys don't have the power to quickly get out if trouble. I drive a 7 series and am amazed how polo's and golf's think they can out race me...

      manny.dasilva.902 - 2012-10-28 08:25

VW's only? General attitude of drivers, whether car, truck, bus or taxi is one of concern. And we will not mention BMW & Audi drivers, for fear of starting the next war!!

      paul.botha.967 - 2012-10-28 09:14

      Your 7 series draadkar !!

      tebogo.makaneta - 2012-10-28 10:08

Nyiko you are out of line.

      tsaneka1 - 2012-10-28 10:33

Did it occur to you that they're just driving and not racing with you?

      KReddy - 2012-10-28 10:49

You just wanted to enforce your faux \superiority complex\ here by saying you drive a bmw 7 series , like a cake I'm sure. No one cares what you drive.

      patrick.makgeledise - 2012-10-28 13:06

Keep on racing, show us how fast your 7series can be, to go to heaven it is that fastest.

      archie.mooki - 2012-10-28 15:40

second hand 2001 BMW .....It can be out raced

  • nyiko.ngobeni.5011 - 2012-10-28 08:12

But I've got nothing to prove so I ignore them...

  • mrp721 - 2012-10-28 11:37

I used to work night shift & would leave at 05h30 to go home, i used to use the N12 and you would be amazed at the speed trucks would drive.. Trucks at night and early mornings are a menace on the roads as they know there are no traffic officers on the roads then..

  • vera.platt - 2012-10-28 15:08

Truck drivers are unchecked in this country. They should have limiters placed in their vehicles!
