Durban - A truck driver is lucky to be alive after a crash on the N3 near Cato Ridge left the cab of his vehicle in tatters.

The man is understood to have climbed out of the wreckage before paramedics arrived, fortunate to have sustained only minor injuries.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said that the truck had slammed into the back of another which had stopped at an off-ramp.

“Shortly after 06:00 paramedics arrived on scene and found the severely mangled wreck on the side of the road. Initially paramedics expected to find that the occupant of the truck sustained critical injuries. Upon assessment they found that the driver was sitting on a nearby guardrail with only a few scrapes and bruises,” he said.

“The driver explained to paramedics that he managed to climb out of the mangled wreckage prior to paramedics’ arrival. He was treated on scene and transported to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg hospital for further treatment,” he said.
