Truck hits car in emergency lane

2011-01-05 10:37

Durban - One person died and two others were injured when a car and truck collided in Paradise Valley on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

The car driver apparently stopped to change a flat tyre in the emergency lane when a truck hit the vehicle, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

The jaws-of-life were used to free the injured from the wreckage and they were taken to hospital.

A male passenger in the car died.

It was not known if the truck driver was injured.

Since when do we have blind truck drivers, or is this another example of ignorence.

      confuzled - 2011-01-05 11:05

Reckon it has more to do with the truck driving in the emergency lane than visual impairement. Not really a smart thing to do.

  • QTPi - 2011-01-05 10:50

And Gerrit Knoetze, this is why not...

      louis.pietersen - 2011-01-05 11:56

was just about to say the same thing - 2011-01-05 12:01

I second that! I hope he realises now how stupid his statements were! Look at the consequences!

      Andy49 - 2011-01-05 12:58

well said Gerrit, my thoughts exactly.

  • Wendy - 2011-01-05 10:51

Something needs to be done about these trucks. I drive on N3 everyday from Alberton to Midrand. It is shocking the way they drive especially in the rain.

      Robert - 2011-01-05 12:15

I agree totally with Wendy,I too travel that road to Midrand and they just don't have any road rules.

  • QTPi - 2011-01-05 10:51

And Gerrit Knoetze, this is why not...

  • Gr1m - 2011-01-05 10:55

What the f is a truck doing that speed in the yellow lane for??? Murder charge I say!

      K-9-Commando - 2011-01-05 13:42

I agree, my sister lost a friend that way, a BMW driving in the yellow lane smashed into him when his car broke down.

      Dolphins - 2011-01-05 14:23

What speed? Are we reading the same piece?

  • Melly30 - 2011-01-05 10:56

When do trucks drive in the emergency lane anyway... O wait, only in SA...

      Jacques - 2011-01-05 11:07

Have you seen the IDIOTS who flashes lights and Hoot if you do not move into the yellow lane(READ EMERGENCY LANE)!! Next IDIOT who flashes or Hoots for me WILL get a stone or bottle through his windscreen.

      KevD - 2011-01-05 14:42

Because there are too many impatient car drivers who bitch and maon because the truck driver did not pull over.

  • kingswing69 - 2011-01-05 10:58

why are these drivers breaking the law and the pigs dont do anything how many more people need to die on our roads.these drivers think they can do what they want .

      Darwinian - 2011-01-05 11:55

hehehehe, also read porkers, rashers, Pork strips, Bacon.....

  • BlackPoison - 2011-01-05 11:01

The truck driver must have moved over to the left to make way for Gerrit Knoetse who wrote "How do some drivers sleep at night?" yesterday.

      Irie Fairie - 2011-01-05 11:58

      hahahahaha good one!

  • Jacques - 2011-01-05 11:08

Have you seen the IDIOTS who flashes lights and Hoot if you do not move into the yellow lane(READ EMERGENCY LANE)!! Next IDIOT who flashes or Hoots for me WILL get a stone or bottle through his windscreen.

      Gazza Boy - 2011-01-05 12:47

If you throw a stone or a bottle at my windscreen I will push you off the road. If you have a problem with people who flash or hoot at you then just don't move over.

      IceBlaster - 2011-01-05 14:30

If this happened on the highway chances are that there were 2 lanes so the truck drive then has n excuse.

      IceBlaster - 2011-01-05 14:30

      no excuse

  • Jan - 2011-01-05 11:15

Exactly why the courtesy to move into the emergency lane to let fast traffic pass should be declared illegal, its dangerous and kills people!

      beetlecrusher - 2011-01-05 13:46

With you 100% Jan. Unless you really can see further than 150m ahead. In any case where the visibility is not 100% I would not move over even if the que was 5 kilos long behind me... not worth killing someone that had to pull over for a real emergency.

  • michelle.lombaard - 2011-01-05 11:18

And then you get people who get impatient or cause an accident if a truck driver doesnt move over to the yellow lane fast enough so that they can pass!

  • Zoolie - 2011-01-05 11:20

O Gerrit you are going to get it today my friend. There is time and place for everything, dont make it the norm. If you can`t drive, get someone who can and let them show you why there are rules. This incident is just a drop in the bucket of incidents that happen because of people thinking they know better.

      Andy49 - 2011-01-05 13:56

Ed Zachary; Gerrit you are are plonker..

  • Mashwan - 2011-01-05 11:23

For Goodness sake, we are loosing people everyday on the roads and nothing is happening to educate the public about these fatalities. The government has installed cameras on the highways, and they should dedicate a channel on TV to teach the public on what can go wrong on these roads. I recently lost a friend and a colleague from the very same incident, he was hit from behind by a truck and pushed toward an on coming traffic that resulted to a head on collision. The Minister of transport must act and educate the public because we are not winning this battle. What is he doing about it?

      asteve - 2011-01-05 15:45

Education wont help. They know they are breaking the law and just do not give a dam. Bottom line its poor policing of the traffic.

  • watalife - 2011-01-05 11:33

This will carry on and on and people will be hurt or killed and the Govamunt will do nothing. Its all about respect. I am surprised that a taxi was not involved for once.He should be charged with murder.

      Mashwan - 2011-01-05 11:58

watalife, what happened to your vote is your voice? Can't we elect people that will change the situation and do something about these problems? We are talking about people's lives here, not just figures, remember....

      IceBlaster - 2011-01-05 14:35

@ Mashwan, we can't elect a new government, you have to live in a democratic country for that.

  • Kathy - 2011-01-05 11:41

The drivers must learn that the emergency lane is for just that. But we must not only look at the trucks we must look at the taxi's as well as the people who cannot wait like everyone else and try to get to their desination faster!

      Andy49 - 2011-01-05 13:57

Gerrit, are you reading these comments?

  • Gary Botha - 2011-01-05 11:53

This sort of illegal activity needs to be punished. How often do you see cars / taxis flying by in the emergency lane.

  • Treborani - 2011-01-05 12:09

It isn't an emergency lane, it's an overtaking lane for taxi's !.....

  • Flee - 2011-01-05 12:26

I have seen when my BF used the emergency lane... Medics and Police had been called to his house and a family member was critical~ (Before you all question).. and he was blocked off by about 4 taxi's, a truck and some brunette bimbo, in a skadoinky uno turbo... Emergency means just that... what was so bad the truck driver was hurtling in that lane anyway???

  • Doug - 2011-01-05 12:46

Now if that was a taxi with a flat tyre...........

      Zoolie - 2011-01-05 13:05

      Andy49 - 2011-01-05 13:58

      what? 30 dead?

  • jill.crewe - 2011-01-05 12:54

If you park on the barrier nowdays some idiot will still find a way to hit you....

      K-9-Commando - 2011-01-05 13:54

Just like the time my dad pulled over in a wide road in a parking area, the idiots pulled up behind him and started hooting, and the people next to the road made nasty comments. All of them too stupid to see that there was more than enough room to pass, some people on our steets should be locked up for being stupid.

  • PAR - 2011-01-05 13:47

All TRUCKS should have to have a contact number displayed on the back of the vehicle together with a code so that bad driving can be reported. It is not always easy to see the registration number when the truck is speeding away through a red robot. They know that they are bigger than us and we will come off second best so they just dont give a damn.

      Doug - 2011-01-05 14:20

Never mind the trucks taxis are the main cause of accidents, road rage etc.

  • Dolphins - 2011-01-05 14:22

And there you have it Gerrit Knoetze, this truck driver will probably not sleep too well tonight thanks to the likes of you on the road. He probably pulled off to let some BMW roadhog pass him! My condolences to the family of those in the vehicle.

  • pepper - 2011-01-05 14:30

seriously people...when was the last time you were on the push the trucks off so that they can pass and drive at breakneck speed in anyway. another thing is next time before you go off at all the taxi's driving this and that bad and doing this wrong and that wrong, check your own driving! I am absolutely amazed at how bad people in private vehicles drive! speeding and cutting people off and parking in bad places and crap driving is not only a taxi/truck problem! it is a general SA driving problem.

  • Jan - 2011-01-05 15:04

Exactly why the courtesy to move into the emergency lane to let fast traffic pass should be declared illegal, its dangerous and kills people!

  • Hawkeye1 - 2011-01-05 15:29

after reading all the comments on this ! you all have serious chips on your shoulders ! that law is a very good law if used correctly !! i am sure that the truck driver could see ahead of him but did not bother just roared along the road without checking !!! laws dont cause accidents just stupid and irrisponsible people !!!!!

  • Craig - 2012-03-16 15:07

Do you remember the days when they installed those yellow landmine looking things in the emergency lanes to prevent idiots abusing the lane ?
