Tuks maths prof shot in robbery

2012-11-06 09:13

Johannesburg - A University of Pretoria (Tuks) professor is in a critical, but stable condition in hospital after being shot by intruders in his Elarduspark home, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Tuks science, maths and technology education department head Professor Max Braun was shot in the stomach on Saturday, and had to have 12 blood transfusions.

"They initially thought he wasn't going to make it, but it sounds like he's making progress," said his wife Clare Braun, who was shot in the left shoulder, and was also in hospital.

She and her husband were woken by a noise early on Saturday, and walked into the dark passage to investigate.

"I assumed that someone was breaking into the house, because over the past 30 years, we've had 10 burglaries... it was very dark, but I think there were three robbers. The one grabbed my arm, and I resisted. After that they just opened fire."

Captain Pinky Sinyane said no arrests had been made.

      LutherKingsley - 2012-11-06 10:21

News24 we need to know the "robbers" race, gender and ages so we can be prepared, it will also help the public coming forward with information.... but I forgot its not legal in SA to mention the thugs race/appearance, so we'll just make a general assumption and get called racists.

Not only are they killing the ones feeding them (farmers), they are also targeting the ones educating them. What a generation of geniuses.

No wonder we have the worst maths an science rating in Africa. Because our citizens would rather kill them than learn from them. Shoot them before they shoot you

It is the culture of the ANC: "violence is the answer to all challenges" There is no more control or leadership in this country.

What? I know the professor - he is awesome! Looks like James Clerk Maxwell. I went to his office once and he was working out satellite trajectories. He taught 3d year quantum mechanics a couple of years ago. Get well soon professor!

      matewis.jubilai - 2012-11-06 10:32

By the way he is a professor in Physics, not Mathematics.

Pity the government is not taken out one at a time. Maybe then they will think of bring in the death penalty. The only reason they do not is because they need the votes and criminals can vote.

  • kitty2wp - 2012-11-06 10:46

all i can say with heavy saddness. is take whatever you have to your name and leave SA. you will miss your beloved country and yearn for so many of your favourite things and you will feel defeated for losing hope - but statistically you will be better off and not have to watch the demise and ruin of everything around you. We needed educated teachers and good doctors to stay - but it's not about "running", it's the truth - SA is going down faster than we can keep up. Sad!!!

  • riotousr - 2012-11-06 10:47

    May they get well soon.

And here we are. Still sitting on our fat asses complaining and doing nothing about it. You can't expect other people to march and fight for you. There is power in numbers you know! The ball is firmly in our court now, and has been for a long time.

We are not going to put a halt to the anarchy that is taking root in our country until we as a nation adopt a "zero tolerance" approach to crime! This ranges from prosecuting and punishing from the village idiot who overturns a dustbin to the white collar or political cadre criminal, and bringing back true "hard labour" into our prison sentences! Each of us should join our local community policing forum and taking positive action in bringing an end to this plague, and every single one of us must vote with our minds and not with our hearts at the next election to ensure that we get the government (at all levels) that we deserve, otherwise we have no one else to blame but ourselves!
