Pretoria - Students at the University of Pretoria took their protest over fee increases to the streets after vice chancellor Cheryl de la Rey failed to address them on Wednesday.

Protesting students threatened to bring Hatfield to a standstill if she did not address them at the student centre.

Earlier, as De la Rey made her way outside the administration building, she was greeted by a wave of boos from the crowd.

De la Rey was handed a memorandum of demands by the students but when she tried to address them they could not hear her and asked her to meet them at the student centre where there was a sound system.

The students left the administration building and waited for her at the student centre but she did not arrive.

Just before 13:00 the students, singing and dancing in the scorching sun, headed off the campus and on to the streets.

The group were marching up Lynnwood Road pass the university's residences, booing white students who were standing on the sidelines watching.
