Tuks student wounded in campus shooting

2012-04-11 22:46

Pretoria - A female student at the University of Pretoria was wounded in a shooting incident on the Hatfield campus on Wednesday.

TUKS FM, the university's radio station, posted on Twitter that it had happened during a graduation ceremony. People on the scene reportedly saw the woman sit down and cover herself with her graduation gown before the gunshot was heard.

It added though that according to campus security director Colin Fouche, the shooting appeared to be accidental.

A spokesperson for Tuks, Sanku Tsunke, also said it seemed to have been an accident, adding that it had happened near the student centre.

Tsunke said the gun, which was in the woman's possession, accidentally discharged, wounding her in the stomach.

"It was accidental, it was not the result of crime-related activity."

The matter was being investigated by Brooklyn police.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said the woman, in her mid 20s, was seriously injured.

She was stabilised at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital.

Gun carrying during graduation???? Is this American story?

      Boer - 2012-04-12 00:23

What happened to South-Africa? Carrying a gun to go and study. Ja nee daai plek is moer verby.

      Marina - 2012-04-12 05:54

With the crime in SA, can you blame her? Remember she still has to get home after graduation. She was just silly to carry the gun in an unsafe manner.

      Johan - 2012-04-12 08:40

@Boer & Marina, you don't have an idea what you are talking about! Things are not that bad in SA. I have been going to Tuks for the past six years and never have I even got a sniff of violence. Tuks is a world class university (I have studied at a few abroad) and this is an unfortunate isolated incident. I have never seen a student with a weapon on campus. We cannot blame the university for this individuals personal agenda.

      Maxil - 2012-04-12 09:09

@Johan - I agree Tuks is a great and safe varsity. But 6 years at Tuks? Professional student? Good lord man, you are 24! Get a job already!

      Juan - 2012-04-12 09:22

@maxil Maybe ask the man what qualifications he's got, before you make a silly comment like that!

      Marina - 2012-04-12 10:13

@Johan Don't be so touchy and take the time to read my posting before you comment. Nowhere did I mention TUKS and nor did Boer for that matter. There IS a world outside of TUKS campus you know. Think outside the box my friend.

      philip.venter1 - 2012-04-12 10:21

"Tuks student wounded in campus shooting" <---- WTF is wrong with you News24. If someone accidentely shoots themselves and happens to be on a campus then it's not a "campus shooting". You make it sound as if there was some lunatic who went on a killing spree at Tuks and managed to wound someone and that is misleading and dishonest. Some of us have loved ones studying at tuks so a misleading title like that can make us worry. Where is your journalistic intergrity?

      Maxil - 2012-04-12 10:32

@ Juan (and facebook friend of Johan) - I did ask. Try reading my post. And I love the fact that he removed his post about being a "lecturer and doctorate degree."

      Johan - 2012-04-12 11:20

@Maxil, I didn't want to come across as arrogant. But seems like you have lots of time to research other people's lives. Perhaps you should 'Get a job already!' ;-)

      Juan - 2012-04-12 13:42

@maxil (friend of no one). 'Professional student' is a term used for someone who studies for a long period of time, because they can't pass subjects. Maybe consider stop talking out of your traviANUS (Your are not the only one who can troll the internet).

    No one is that stuped

      Zander - 2012-04-11 23:03

      stupid* also *facepalm*

      mario.dippenaar - 2012-04-11 23:28

I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that she probably meant to say: "stupe", which is a hot, wet, often medicated cloth used as a compress. So after she shot herself, she didn't have anything to stanch the bleeding, hence Mrs. Olivier comment about the how irresponsible youths are that do not carry first aid kits. Ain't that right?

      Tony Lapson - 2012-04-12 00:06

No, she was trying to say stupid*

      Johan - 2012-04-12 07:40

Lol, you guys complain about Cassandra's spelling mistake but no one picked up the 'Hatfiel' in the article instead of Hatfield.

      Mattewis - 2012-04-12 11:47

Herself included! I'm convinced there's more to this story than what is reported here, and that this may not be the accident implied. Was her name actually on the graduation list, ie did she really graduate? Watch this space....... if News24 do the trouble to follow up!

  • bernadette.mundy - 2012-04-11 22:59

It didn't happen at a graduation ceremony because she was lying on the grass outside the student centre when the paramedics were attending to her. Graduation ceremonies were being held at the LC De Villiers sports grounds.

  • nadia.romanos - 2012-04-11 23:15

Tuks FM did not say that the incident happened during a graduation ceremony. She was on the grass outside the student centre at the time of the shooting.

      Andre - 2012-04-11 23:38

Trust News24 to try and add some unfounded twists to reality.. bleh!

      John - 2012-04-12 03:50

@Andre. If you read the article it definitely leads you to believe that it happened during the ceremony, from my overseas perspective anyway. Thanks News24 for a misleading article. Never the less, are things that bad in SA now that you you have to carry guns to graduation, the other question is where did she get the gun?

      Johan - 2012-04-12 08:27

@JohnB, No, things are not that bad in SA. I have been going to Tuks for the past six years and never have I even got a sniff of violence. Tuks is a world class university (I have studied at a few abroad) and this is an unfortunate isolated incident. I have never seen a student with a weapon on campus. • richard.lemmer1 - 2012-04-11 23:15

Unfortunately she probably have to carry a gun in this lawless , criminal lead country to protect herslelf from maybe the Police ........

  • witness.phele - 2012-04-11 23:18

Wow now da graduation gowns r made with gun pockets or was the intention of shootin da professor who made her suffer wit modules.\r\ngot to get myself a CANNON DURIN MY GRADUATIONS.

  • bernadette.mundy - 2012-04-11 23:43

This shooting happened just after 5 30pm. Odd that she was at the wrong venue for graduation and at the wrong time too, with a loaded gun in her possession that managed to \accidentally\ be set off. Rumour at Tuks is that she is a student who had failed the degree but had said she passed to her parents. Would like News24 to report an accurate story coz the current one doesn't add up. Who packs a gun to graduation anyway?!

      Marina - 2012-04-12 05:58

Someone who doesn't want to become a statistic!

      bernadette.mundy - 2012-04-12 09:35

@Marina, Tuks graduation ceremonies are huge, secure events as Tuks is one of the best universities in the country. This girl had more chance of being stuck by lightening whilst holding a winning lottery ticket than becoming a victim of a violent crime on campus or at a Tuks event. The only statistic she will add to now would probably be attempted suicides. She also had family members there too for the supposed pseudo-graduation so an excuse of self-defence would be rubbish. If she was a woman on her own who felt threatened in the evenings it would make sense, but when ur with ur whole family within the apparent given situation, armed defence shouldn't be needed- especially on our campus.

      Philemon - 2012-04-12 13:54

I agree. Had it been Loftus Versfeld then no one could blame her.

      Phili - 2012-04-12 03:58

Sechaba, this is not about crime, she did it to herself. \r\nPS: I had to sit down and cry for a moment after reading your comment.

  • biancarv - 2012-04-12 01:06

The headline of this article completely takes the blame off the woman who was shot. She shot herself! You make it sound like someone shot her and she's a victim. She's an idiot! It sounds like a suicide to me (covering herself in her robe and then shooting herself 'by mistake'). If it's not that, who did she intend using the gun on? I'm glad no one else was hurt by her bringing a loaded gun to campus.

  • mknnko003 - 2012-04-12 02:42

    Gun and Graduation ceremony...reallY?

  • chimzyn - 2012-04-12 04:22

she probably shot herself, because she didnt pass all the modules and she lied that she passed. I bet she was one of those fugitive genius.

  • sandimzilikazi - 2012-04-12 05:17

Wtf was she doing with a gun at a graduation ceremony in the first place! And she covered herself with her gown before the shot was heard!!! Errrrr doesn't add up, this was no accident

  • Muofhe - 2012-04-12 05:36

she shot herself deliberately not accidentally.y did she have to cover herself with a gown b4 the shooting?come on.......

  • brionyl.french - 2012-04-12 05:45

Um its Hatfield... someone forgot the D. But why are kids bringing weapons to class? What did she think she needed the gun for? was it hers? Whos name was it registered in? Has it been used in other crimes?

  • Mpho Ramokoka - 2012-04-12 05:47

but really now, a gun @ the graduation ceremony, what's the moral behind this, commit suicide in public come on sister girl that's messed up...

  • Marina - 2012-04-12 05:51

That's what happens when you don't keep the gun in a holster and the hammer down.

  • kabamba.chipulu - 2012-04-12 08:58

Its quite unfortunate that since this woman is white everyone assumes this woman was carrying the gun for self protection yet we have had incidents both here and abroad where students have gone to campus with a loaded gun and ended up killing fellow students because of stupid personal vendettas

      Elize - 2012-04-12 10:28

@Kabamba where does it say she is white??

      United.Red.Angel - 2012-04-13 09:00

  • Jacques Engelbrecht - 2012-04-12 10:26

My mom carried a 9mm in her purse for 20 years, one up the spout, hammer not cocked safety on. If she were ever to fire the criminal would end up with a rouged face and tissues due to all the lipstick we found in the barrel one day when we cleaned it... I dont carry gun.. My jeans are too tight...

  • Bruce - 2012-04-12 16:52

Dear Johan, You can easily study 6 years plus, if you carry on to a doctorate. My son did so, having to work half time to support himself. Where do medical doctors and your lecturers who have higher degrees come from!

  • Deon - 2012-04-12 17:30

campus shooting... really?? it was one person wounded by their own firearm, hardly any people shooting at each other as the headline states.

Why would she be on main campus 'on her way to graduate' when graduations take place at another campus? Also, no graduations have been happening at night time!
