Tutu calls for Middle East ceasefire

2012-11-16 22:26

Johannesburg - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has appealed to the authors of the recent violence in the Middle East to urgently lay down their arms.

While doing so, they should bear in mind that "those whom they treat with such contempt are also God's children", he said in a statement on Friday.

The Associated Press reported on Friday that at least 22 Palestinians, including 12 militants and six children, and three Israelis had been killed in three days of fierce exchanges between the Israeli military and Gaza militants. Seven Palestinians were killed earlier in the week from another series of airstrikes.

According to the news agency, Israel claimed it was bombarding Gaza in retaliation for Islamic militant rocket attacks.

"Once again, the innocent people of Israel and Palestine are paying with their blood to advance the divisive and exclusive agendas of the intolerant few," Tutu said in a statement.

"Once again, fanatics on both sides blame each other and claim to be acting with the approval of God.

"Once again, the world wrings its hands and seeks to heal this gaping wound with a flimsy, impermanent plaster of tenuous ceasefire."

The retired cleric said lasting peace in the Holy Land would benefit not only the people of Palestine and Israel.

"The conflict there is echoed in hatred and mistrust across the world," he said.

He appealed to the world - led by the United Nations (UN), and the powerful nations with geopolitical and economic interests in the region - to prioritise developing a solution for sustainable peace and security for the people of Israel and Palestine.

"The sustainable solution must include the return of illegally occupied land and the creation of two nation states, in a process overseen by UN peacekeepers," he said.

While I agree with your sentiment, I'd far rather you focussed your attention on matters closer to home or have you not noticed the carnage in your own backyard?

Spare me the bs tutu... You don't like the Palestinians, u just hate jews... If u cared about the 30 dead Palestinians why u silent about the 37000 dead Syrians. Tutu u are are hypocrite and a racist... U lost the plot many years ago... It's not surprise madiba shrugs you off.

If this man was a true leader of this country he would have cared more about the trouble we are having in the WC and then only after our stuff is sorted he should bother about problem in other countries/territories. A huge problem in our country, they try to fix Zim's unemployment problems by allowing them all to come work here, they want a permanent seat on the UN-security council and they can't handle the security of SA. Old Mildred Oliphant was busy with her international duties instead of comming back to sort out our troubles. Our politician runs the African Union but she couldn't even run her own department. The people has place bigger emphasis on international issues than our own problems.

Hanif I think you would do well to reconsider the SA demographic before uttering such sweeping and trite generalisations......

Most of the comments against Israel seems to be coming from people with a one track mind, fact of the matter remains if they stop firing from Gaza Israel has no reason to continue. The stupid comments and so called facts of civilians killed in Gaza are probably from Arab based sources. Luckily hamas are clowns and fire without aiming israel can.

      john.bucknall.1 - 2012-11-17 03:33

Exactly Blip, why is he not crying out for the 1000's of Syrians being slaughtered on a daily basis. He is supposed to be retired but he grabs at every opportunity to make a few more bucks. Tutu, spend a bit of time crying about the atrocities being carried out here in your own backyard by your beloved cANCer and then we might prick up our ears and listen to your Hypocrisy. Throw in the towel already, nobody is listening.

  • kitty2wp - 2012-11-17 05:21

If Palestine puts down their weapons there will be peace. If Israel puts down their weapons there will be no Israel. So many middle east countries killing one another and fighting all detracting from the fact that Israel have been intercepting rockets in their skies for a long period of time and they got their target recently and didn't simply fire into civillian territory. Unfortunately these Hamas commanders use the Palestinians and human shields. It is sad. I wish i could tell Israel to give it up - but they only have a small portion of land on this planet, where should they go exactly? Into the sea? People who claim to fight in the name of their God are so wrong. So called intelligent, religious leaders acting like animals - war war war. So sad. If i pick up a gun - it's to defend my family not because my God says so.

      erick.birdy - 2012-11-17 07:31

Kitty, Yes, it is very sad. Most of the wars are because of religion, whether the war mongers are Muslems, Christians, Jews or Atheists.

      brigitte.liebenberg.5 - 2012-11-17 10:02

@hanif - a big mistake was made in 1948 which can't be changed now. When I was at school we had a map of the Middle East on the classroom wall clearly showing a country called Palestine. We may not know if proper discourse was held in 1948 but everyone was still reeling from the shock of the 2nd world war and Hitlers atrocities. We now have to look forward for solutions but it takes ALL sides to want peace, and unfortunately, it always appears that the Arab nations would rather be at war.

Tutu moved permanently to the USA therefore he is so silent about SA internal problems. Does not know corruption by ANC, new village to the so called president, Marikana, farming protest, anything ... So he is rather talking about Hamas “freedom fighters”. Rather talk to his buddies in the Party and sort out a huge problems in this beautiful country.

  • Montagnes.Bleues - 2012-11-17 06:34

Tutu becoming a really old tyrannical attention seeker anywhere BUT at home these days. Here nobody listens to him any more after the ruling regime ridiculed him some years ago. Why not concentrate more on issues of black traditional families getting multiple child grants 'even for ghost pregnancies' AND selling their kids for cows, lice, tick, AND FLEAS if Lindiwe Sisulu is anything to go by between quick jet rides. There are also a few little issues about the Black Broad Backed Entitled Embezzlers furiously attacking each other to get the last few Randelas that the tax payers coffers still contain and which have not ended up in the Nkandla Khaya. But overriding all these matters is that of the demise of Democracy in SA, brutalized by the zuma-anc-pf tribal DUMP. South Africa is sitting underneath a pile of zuma DUMP at this moment and the bulk of citizens have had enough and are starting to show signs of discontent by raping great grandmothers because their door was open and even ten year olds killing other kids so as to emulate malema and zuma. The syphon which is the xhosa-nostra eastern cape black hole has being strangled by the zulu-rapists and priced out of this universe let alone world by Dichaba's and Nene's and Mfeka's leaving the ntsaluba's and giqwas & maphanga's quite distraught as they still provoke their tokoloshe 'poverty' in search of more funding. So suggestion is - for you to redirect your "soothing" gaze back homeward and on more immediate TOKOLOSHE'S

      erick.birdy - 2012-11-17 07:24

Rashida, Please, get your facts together! Like I said on another post. This is a continuation of an age old war between Muslems and the Jews/Christians. It will never end. So yes, Tutu is wasting his time. He is only trying to score browny points.

      MallyGold - 2012-11-17 22:17

@Rashida: The Jews do not promote the brain washing of children in military training camps; teaching them how to blow themselves up and cause maximum deaths of Jews and other non Muslims. The Jews don’t hijack planes, nor kill athletes at the Olympics ... or blow themselves up in German restaurants. There is not one single Jew who has destroyed a church. There is not a single Jew who protests by killing people. The Jews don’t traffic slaves, nor do any of their leaders call for Jihad and death to all the Infidels. Perhaps the world’s Muslims should consider investing more in standard education and less in blaming the Jews for all their problems. Maybe Muslims should ask what they can do for humankind; before they demand that humankind respects them.

This is the same self serving, pontififying pratt that was less than a year ago telling us all that Israel was a arpartheid nation and the Palestineans were God's virtuous people. He got it wrong then as he has with a lot of the crap he speaks. Now this one eyed monster want hostilities that he with his opinions have stoked Hamas into beleiving that they have world support. Although it is like JZ, when he is overseas we don't have to suffer his opinions on SA, so as long as Tutu focuses on international conflicts we don't have his local opinions to deal with.

  • terrylee.heuer - 2012-11-17 09:10

  • antjie.vanstraaten - 2012-11-17 10:08

So Israel must sit and do nothing about the missiles fired from Palestine? Why are the rulers in Palestine not stopping the perpetrators? If they did it would not have been necessary for Israel to defend themselves. I pray that you would learn to think before you speak Mister Tutu.

  • louis.langenhoven - 2012-11-17 11:41

Why are you asking for a ceasefire NOW when Isreal is shooting back? The AUTHORS as you put it is clearly the Palestinians who started the fight. "People being treated with contempt" who are also God's children- who are you referring to- the Palestinians I take it. Who treated them with contempt? They started shooting at Isreal... Your subtle misconstruance of the facts are noted Tutu

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-17 12:08

If it wasn't for Apartheid, who would ever have heard of Tutu?

  • jairaj.sureschandra - 2012-11-17 12:19

It appears that by his comments, TUTU demonstrates anti-Christian behaviour. Have you, TUTU not read the Bible and have you not read what Lord Jesus said about Israel in the last days. Go read the Book of Revelations. God is bigger than you and the corrupt ANC..... God will give us justice against your whims and the ANC's. God is not mocked. Every day we cry out, like the JEWS, for justice. GOD is not deaf. We serve the Living God. Mark my words......... Your should rathr serve GOD than your own opinions .........A holy priest in disguise ..... God knows your works .................

      SunblushStarfish - 2012-11-18 04:09

Well said! Tutu clearly demonstrates anti-Christian behaviour and his actions do not line up with the doctrine he professes to follow. He does not know the truth and the truth is not in him and therefore nothing true can come from his mouth. He is a liar, fraud and is exposed by his own words.

  • GregGow1234 - 2012-11-17 13:22

    Shut up Tutu

  • phillip.marchant.52 - 2012-11-17 14:35

Dear Arch. Yes, an immediate ceasefire, but moreso an end to all hostilities, is long overdue. The trouble is, you were not heard when Israel was beseeching her neighbour to stop firing rockets into Israeli territory. Each time the heroic military regime of Hamas wants to create an 'international incident' in a vain attempt to turn the civilized world's allegiances against Israel, they start firing their terror over the border from the safety of civilian enclave, eager to drink the blood of their children and hold them up to the world, when the sleeping tiger awakes. Your solution to 'divide and share' is a vain and naive hope. Have you not noticed that whatever Israel gives it not enough? How does one share, when the other has expressly stated that it's all or nothing, and exile for the giver? Your solutions are disappointing, clearly. Remind me when it was that Israel claimed divine authority to attack another nation? I think not. God favours Israel no more and no less than any other nation, and it is solely for reasons that Israel is an internationally acclaimed sovereign state, that they legitimately defend themselves against military threat. Peace will return to the middle east only, when Hamas, and other terrorist nations or groups, are spoken to in the only language they understand. There is no honour in terrorism, and there is only one way to deal with it. When the world condemns the aggressor rather than the otherwise benign defender, a start will have been made.

  • Debbie - 2012-11-17 15:05

In my opinion Tutu is doing what any nobel peace prize winner would do! Perhaps he has said things to the Zuma's and Malema's of our country and perhaps it has not been publicized. Well done Tutu...at least you are doing something! But when this is over, please speak some peace into SA and make sure it is publicized!

      SunblushStarfish - 2012-11-18 04:05

Debbie dear, there is nothing nobel about Tutu or the prize he won. It is a sad day when people start supporting a communist yellow belly like him and you think that there is any honour or truth in him. He does not care about you or the country, he is media whoremonger and his intentions less than honourable. The fact of the matter is, that he will exposed for the fraud that he is.

  • schalkwbu31ger - 2012-11-17 15:12

Tutu shut up. You don't condemn all the murders, rapes and violence in South Africa but you have a lot to say about other countries. You and Mandela have not once come out and said anything about the nonsense going on in this country.

  • toni.watson.169 - 2012-11-17 22:14

And the rest of the story u fialed to post.............Moving forward, Tutu expresses his concerns about the direction the current government in South Africa is headed. He has also become more outspoken about his criticism of the ruling party, and the rainbow nation, of what he was once so proud. "We are a wounded people," Tutu says, recalling the painful testimonies he heard as chairman of the TRC hearings. "Things could have been a great deal worse but I still have this sense that they could have been a great deal better," he says of South Africa's political transition. "I think we have let the people down, in so far as you have an elite that has done very, very well for themselves, who have got quite quite rich, and the bulk of the people are still where they were, or sometimes worse off."

  • amir.i.warraich - 2012-11-17 22:54

I am astonished by the Zionist-lobby on this forum and how viciously Tutu is being condemned and resented for standing up for what 90% og the world population wants ... End to violence and destruction! The world majority opinion wants an end and have condemned Israel for its "head for an eye" policy many times. Asia, Africa, Americas, Europe, everywhere people are by large fed-up with these disproportionate actions by the Zionist state and its Zionist backers!

      SunblushStarfish - 2012-11-18 04:01

Astonished? Shows just how ignorant you are. And excuse me but your 90% stat you've sucked out your thumb is utter tripe. That's what 20% of this world wants. Israel have rightful claim to their land which is being illegally occupied. The only thing we are largely fed up with is being dictated to and having ignorant political mongrels telling us what we should do and more so people like you. The only reason you support Tutu is because the yellow belly traitor supports your cause. We support Israel and the Jews.

  • dani.kedar.5 - 2012-11-20 10:00

Tutu, you are embarrassing yourself! Please dont create opinions based on ignorance. Israel is a secular state, and is not 'retaliating' to over 12 000 rockets that have been fired into Israel, AFTER we gave the Palestinians Gaza by forcefully removing our own people from their homes! Israel seeks now to eliminate a threat to their national security. In short, we have found a better ceasefire agreement than the usual rhetoric: Destroy the terrorist party of Hamas!
