Johannesburg - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu's hospitalisation has made headlines around the world, with social media awash with well wishes for the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

France24, Sky News, Al Jazeera, Central China Television and The Guardian all carried stories of Tutu being admitted to hospital.

CBS News, The New York Times, The Washington Post and many other broadcasters and newspapers also covered the news.

On Tuesday, Tutu's foundation in a statement said he was hospitalised for a "persistent infection".

Tutu was reportedly being treated at a Cape Town hospital.

The foundation did not give details about his illness but Tutu's daughter, Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu, said they hoped he will "be able to return home in a day or two".

Mpho officiated at her parent's renewal of their wedding vows less than two weeks ago as they celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Tutu has battled prostate cancer for more than a decade.

In December last year, he had to cancel an appearance at the launch of his legacy foundation project and handover of a children’s playroom at Tygerberg Hospital.

At the time, it was reported that Tutu had to undergo a course of new medication to manage the disease.

On Twitter, users wished the retired archbishop a speedy recovery, with some posting inspirational quotes made by the 83-year-old Tutu himself.
