Cape Town - Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu made his first public appearance on Wednesday after numerous health scares.

The 84-year-old, who celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, attended the fifth annual Desmond Tutu International Peace lecture along with his wife Leah, daughter Mpho and a number of grandchildren.

Tutu, walking with the support of a stick, looked frail as he slowly made his way to the stage, followed closely by guest speaker Public Protector Thuli Madonsela. He received a standing ovation from the packed hall as he did so.

Introduced by radio host Redi Tlhabi as the birthday boy, "The Arch" as he is affectionately known, blew her a kiss in acknowledgement from his seat. He was flanked by his daughter and Madonsela.

The lecture, attended by hundreds of people, including clergy, will be addressed by Madonsela, who will address the crowd on Democracy and Peace: What's the law got to do with it?

Tutu, who had been plagued by health problems for years, was hospitalised in July with an infection and again in August with an inflammation. He took several weeks to recover.
