Johannesburg - An ailing Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was to spend a second night in a Cape Town hospital on Wednesday where he is being treated for what his family said was a "persistent infection".

In a statement released by the Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation, his daughter, Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu, said her father thanked everyone for the well wishes.

It was not immediately clear what condition Tutu was in, as the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu had said on Tuesday they expected her father to be discharged "in a day or two".

Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, called for people to pray for Tutu.

"We hope the persistent infection for which Archbishop Tutu is again being treated will be cleared up quickly, and that he will be able to go home to his family soon," Makgoba said.

"I appeal to people to pray for continuing quality of life for our Archbishop Emeritus and Mrs Tutu."

Tutu's hospitalisation on Tuesday made headlines around the world with social media awash with well wishes for the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

France24, Sky News, Al Jazeera, Central China Television and The Guardian all carried stories on Tutu being admitted to hospital.

CBS News, The New York Times, The Washington Post and many other broadcasters and newspapers also covered the news.

Tutu has battled prostate cancer for more than a decade.

In December last year, he had to cancel an appearance at the launch of his legacy foundation project and hand over of a children’s playroom at Tygerberg Hospital.

At the time, it was reported that Tutu had to undergo a course of new medication to manage the disease.

On Twitter, users wished the retired archbishop a speedy recovery, with some posting inspirational quotes by the 83-year-old Tutu.
