Johannesburg - Project Rhino KZN has denied reports that nature conservationist Ian Player has died.

"Please note that a tweet by Ian's brother Gary has been misinterpreted," said spokesperson Sheelagh Antrobus.

"Ian is still with us, surrounded by his loving family and friends."

She said the family would release an official notice if there was any change in his condition.

Ian's brother and renowned golfer Gary Player tweeted on Friday: "My beloved brother Ian has cast his canoe onto the river of life that will shortly take him across to the other side. I will miss you. Love".

On Wednesday, the Wilderness Network said Player was recovering after suffering a serious stroke with complications.

“He is comfortably at home in the Karkloof, KwaZulu-Natal where he is supported by his wife, Ann, and immediate family members,” the organisation said at the time.

Player, 87, suffered a stroke last Thursday.

He is credited with saving the white rhino from extinction in KwaZulu-Natal in the 1950s.
