Johannesburg - Two men have been arrested for murdering a 13-year-old girl whose body was found floating in a canal in Meloding, say Free State police.

Spokesperson Malebo Khosana said on Friday that the two had been arrested in Virginia on Thursday.

He said police received information that three people wanted to hand themselves in for the murder.

"The police rushed to the place and they arrested two men aged 21 and a third who is a brother of one of the suspects who ran away."

The third person was still at large.

Khosana said Motlalepule Lekhoaba and her 16-year-old boyfriend had been accosted by three men while standing in the street.

The men demanded their cellphones.

When they said they did not have cellphones, the men produced knives and threatened to stab them.

The youth ran away.

The men took the girl to an open veld where they raped her and threw her into a canal when they realised she knew one of them.

They were expected to appear in Virginia Magistrates' Court on Monday, said Khosana.
