Johannesburg - Two children believed to be between the five and six-years-old died in a fire in the Johannesburg CBD on Monday, the city's emergency management services said.

"The fire was at Hancock and Claim streets in the Johannesburg CBD. The building caught fire around 18:00 this evening," spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said.

"An apartment in the building was used as a day care centre. There were unfortunately two young children confirmed dead on scene."

The cause of the fire, since extinguished, was unknown. The city's fire investigating team was on scene and conducting an investigation.

"We request communities to look after their heating and lighting appliances, especially in winter where they receive wide use," Mulaudzi said.
