Johannesburg - Two construction workers were injured at the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton on Tuesday, the third such case this month, the property's owners said.

The ceiling of an empty shop on the second level collapsed on them, said CEO of JHI Properties Nomzamo Radebe.

They were treated on the scene and no customers were injured, she said in a statement.

"Traffic control measures have, however, been put in place around that area to ensure the safety of shoppers."

On June 10, a woman tripped over a carpet and injured her hip.

"There are carpets that have been placed in some parts of the mall. I think the carpets are used to cover the cables since there seems to have been some construction going on," the woman's daughter said at the time.

"So it's either the carpet was not taped down or the tape had come undone. She got her foot underneath the carpet and she fell forward," said the woman, who asked not to be identified.

Also this month, 25-year-old Elfi Loambo was severely injured when a portion of a ceiling fell on her foot. She has had to undergo several operations.

At the time, mall management was criticised for not having acted swiftly enough to help her.
