Johannesburg - Two police constables and two civilians died when their car crashed off a bridge in Joubertina, near Uitenhage, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Constable Mziwekhaya Liwane, 32, was driving the Toyota Corolla which left the R62 in a bend, hit a barrier and careened off a bridge into water below on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

Liwane, Constable Lunathi Nkebe, 32, Joubertina Magistrate's Court interpreter Patrick Skhosana, 34, and their friend Siphiwo Pisani, 34, died.

Emergency personnel had to use hydraulic equipment to extricate their bodies, Naidu said.

Joubertina police station commander Lieutenant Colonel Ruth Slater extended her condolences to the families of those killed.

"We feel very saddened by the unexpected and tragic deaths of our two policemen... We feel aggrieved of being robbed of two young and talented officers."
