Johannesburg - The plane that crashed at East London airport on Wednesday morning had come from Grahamstown, the Eastern Cape health department has confirmed.

Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo told News24 that those injured in the crash had been transported to St Dominic's hospital in East London.

The National Arts Festival is currently taking place in Grahamstown, roughly 230kms from East London.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Airports Company of SA (Acsa) said a runway was closed due to the crash.

"Around 10:15 this (Wednesday) morning, a private aircraft crashed on the main runway of East London airport. Due to the incident, we had to temporarily close that runway but the second runway is open for business," spokesperson Colin Naidoo told News24.

"At this stage, we know there were two adults and three children on board. We are not aware at this stage of their condition and our response team is working first and foremost on the safety of those passengers, and to remove the aircraft from the runway."

He said any incident is always investigated by the SA Civil Aviation Authority.

"They will do their investigation and then issue their report once it is finalised," Naidoo said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Eastern Cape health department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said the two adults on the plane were critically injured in the accident. The three children were also injured.

Provincial health services were at the scene.
