Johannesburg - Two people died and two others were seriously injured when a car struck the side of another vehicle on the R25 in Welbekend, northeast of Benoni, paramedics said on Thursday.

Paramedics and provincial emergency services arrived on the scene and found the crumpled remains of the two vehicles in the road, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

Some of the occupants of the two cars were still trapped inside.

After assessment, it was found two people from the one car, a bakkie, had died due to the injuries they sustained.

After the two seriously injured people were treated on scene, they were taken to hospital.

The accident happened at around 20:00 on Wednesday night.
