Johannesburg - Two women were killed and 13 others injured on Sunday when a taxi they were travelling in overturned several times on the N12 highway near the Lenasia offramp, paramedics said.

"While the taxi was travelling south on the N12, it overturned, ejecting almost all of its occupants," said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

"One of the women that was killed was found by emergency services underneath the taxi and the other was found several meters away from the vehicle."

Local fire and rescue services had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to lift the vehicle off the woman, who had already died by the time the taxi was lifted.

Among the injured was a woman in critical condition, who was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

"The other occupants were treated on the scene for possible spinal injuries as well as lacerations and bruises before they were taken to various hospitals in Johannesburg," said Vermaak.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
