Johannesburg - Two men drowned on Saturday at Hawston Beach, near Hermanus, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said: "It was confirmed that the two, both from Ravensmead in Cape Town, aged 24 and 29, were swept out to sea, apparently while they were swimming."

A lifeguard on duty at a nearby public swimming pool took the 24-year-old out of the surf before paramedics arrived to take over CPR efforts. However, the man was later declared dead on the scene.

NSRI rescuers on a sea rescue craft found the body of the 29-year-old man in the surf and a rescue swimmer recovered the body.

The police have opened an inquest docket.
