Johannesburg - A 40-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a man from Meadowlands in Soweto, Gauteng police said on Saturday.

Constable Sibusiso Chauke said the pair was arrested on Friday.

They were allegedly part of a group of five which kidnapped a Meadowlands man last week.

"[The] suspects took him by force; they also handcuffed him. He was taken into a red Toyota Tazz," said Chauke.

"He was taken to White City where they assaulted him with knobkerrie and bricks and [he] sustained injuries."

They were accusing him of stealing their tyres.

The suspects then took him to the police station where they opened a case of theft against him.

"He was detained at Moroka police cells and he appeared at Protea [Magistrate's] Court on Monday where he was released," said Chauke.

The man then returned to the same police station where he opened a case of kidnapping against his alleged attackers and the pair were arrested.

Police were still conducting further investigations.

Meanwhile, the man and woman were expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday.
