Johannesburg - Two people were killed and two others were critically injured on Saturday when the vehicles they were travelling in collided with one another near Midrand, Johannesburg emergency management services said.

The collision occurred around 22:00 in Klipfontein View, spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said in a statement.

The two were confirmed dead on scene, the other two treated on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital.

The cause of the accident was unclear, Mulaudzi said.

"We therefore would like to urge motorists to drive carefully on our roads as most of our roads are slippery due to rains and also adhere to the prescribed speed limit, obey the rules of the road to avoid accidents like this one."

He also urged motorist to refrain from crossing flooded areas to avoid their vehicles being swept away by flooded waters.
