Krugersdorp - Two people were killed when a truck crashed into two cars on the N14 at the Pinehaven intersection in Krugersdorp on Saturday morning, said paramedics.

ER24 paramedics were at a nearby petrol station when they heard a loud crash.

They rushed to the scene where they found that the large truck had driven through the intersection, collided with a light motor vehicle and dragged another for around a kilometre.

"On assessment, paramedics found the lifeless body of the truck driver lying in the intersection. Unfortunately the driver had already succumbed to his fatal injuries. It is believed that he had jumped from his vehicle upon the collision, but got caught beneath the vehicle tyres," ER24 said in a statement.

"One vehicle was found beneath the wheels of the truck while a second vehicle was found in the nearby intersection."

The driver of the vehicle was declared dead on the scene while a passenger was left in a critical condition.

A fire broke out on the truck but firefighters quickly managed to douse the flames as emergency workers tried to extricate the dead driver and his passenger from the vehicle stuck under the truck.

Once freed, paramedics treated the patient and provided him with advanced life support interventions to stabilise his vital signs.

The man was later airlifted to the Johannesburg Hospital for urgent treatment.

The vehicle that had first been struck by the truck had three passengers in it.

All escaped with minor injuries. The three were treated on scene before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
