2014-05-28 19:13

Cape Town – One person has reportedly been killed and several injured during a shooting at Cape Town International Airport.

ENCA reported that the shooting happened at a restaurant inside the airport on Wednesday evening.

According to reports a man shot a woman before turning the gun on himself.

A News24 user, William Scott, who was at the airport at the time said: “The shooter jumped over the Ocean Basket sushi bar and chased one of the ladies working at the back. She ran though the side door, just past where I was sitting, and the man following behind her pulled out his pistol. He stopped her right in front of the Ocean Basket entrance when he then shot her and followed to shoot himself in the head. Before I left the lady who was shot was still alive and was being helped by some older man.”

Kathryn Swain tweeted: "A man went into Ocean Basket at the CT airport (husband/bf) and shot his gf/wife who was working there then shot himself in the head."

I was there when I happened around 18:10 at the Cape Town International Airport Ocean Basket. The shooter jumped over the Ocean Basket sushi bar and chased one of the ladies working at the back. She ran though the side door, just past where I was sitting, and the man following behind her pulled out his pistol. He stopped her right in front of the Ocean Basket entrance when he then shot her and followed to shoot himself in the head. Before I left the lady who was shot was still alive and was being helped by some older man.

Dramatic! Lovely memories for tourists at our airports.

  • Joe Smith - 2014-05-28 19:33

The gun is probably like the worst invention EVER!

      Andrew Roseveare - 2014-05-28 20:10

Joe unfortunate it is the person holding the gun,not the gun itself.

      lacrimosewolf - 2014-05-28 20:16

@Andrew Roseveare - and what purpose does a gun serve without a person? Crap ornaments and useless gifts?

  • lacrimosewolf - 2014-05-28 19:33

Absurd. Can't take more than 100ml of liquid onto a plane but can roam an airport with a gun

      lacrimosewolf - 2014-05-28 20:10

@Gripen12 - just got back from India via Dubai. Strip-searched in Dubai & Bangalore. For having a titanium knee replacement. Got surgeon's letter and magic sticker. Made no never-mind. Also relieved of (but not at the same time or in the same direction) a cigarette lighter, tweezers, nail clippers, roll-on deodorant & miniature toothpaste. I have no doubt that your ahem, long lens, was harbouring all sorts of technology to ground planes and guide in Gupta-jets :) Now we know for next time - bring a 9mm and spare rounds!

      Tyrone Gavin Fester - 2014-05-28 21:32

People roam the airport for all the years on a daily basis with firearms, nothing wrong with that, (and how many has been shot?) they're just not all psycho! Psycho cops shoot their wife's/girlfriends too! Next thing people will complain when someone gets stabbed as well, how cool will that be eating with plastic knives and forks at restaurants.

      Buzzbar - 2014-05-28 21:20

Asking the ancyl for help is like m@sturbating with a cheese grater. Mildly amusing but mostly pointless and painful.

How did he get a gun into the airport?

      Jaco Geldenhuys - 2014-05-28 20:45

Incident occurred in public area, and it came to light he was a police officer so wouldn't have been suspicious carrying a firearm

      lacrimosewolf - 2014-05-28 21:06

Another out-of-control lunatic with a badge. If it was a police officer, then this is part of the new normal.

      Lashlane Maestro - 2014-05-28 21:37

Easy, the entrance doesnt have security scanners neither does takeaways and restuarants. I was at the scene minutes after the incident. Work at the airport.

      Nomaphelo Nolisi - 2014-05-28 22:50

Warren ctia is a public place easy entrance so where the scene of crime happened not any1 could search for that guy wherether he's got a firearm or not there r certain places where u can be searched ie when u r departing

  • Julia Swain - 2014-05-28 20:45

We were at the airport when the shooting occurred. We were downstairs buying makeup when we heard two shots and saw people starting to flood down the stairs. My first thought was Columbine and I shouted at my daughters to run. We ran flat out out of the airpiort building toward the garage and then stopped when we realised everyone had stopped running. We went back in and up the stairs to see what had happened and we saw the two bodies lying on the ground in Ocean Basket. The police started to push the line of people back. We saw a woman who also worked in Ocean Basket and spoke to her. It was her friend who had been shot and she told us it was the partner who came in and shot her and then himself. How does someone get into the airport with a gun?? It was absolutely awful

      lacrimosewolf - 2014-05-28 20:51

      What made you go back?

      Katleho Kay-Mosia Sekolanyane - 2014-05-28 20:58

Its irrelevant why she went back. Just learn to focus on important information.

      lacrimosewolf - 2014-05-28 21:10

@Katleho Kay-Mosia Sekolanyane - totally relevant in a society morbidly obsessed with crime and violence. Any sane person thinking "Columbine" would keep going. Just because everyone else stopped running they went back. Back to unknown situation when safety is ahead? I think it's very relevant. And macabre.

      Kenneth Maimane - 2014-05-28 21:34

Wolf, look how many thumps up you got.no one disagree with you.do you think the person should have ran towards the sea?

      lacrimosewolf - 2014-05-28 22:33

@Kenneth Maimane - well the sea is very far from the airport but if I got as far as 'the garage' then I would keep going and, as they say in the greatest movies "get the f out of Dodge". If I had Columbine in my mind, no freaking way would I run all the way to the parking (it's far dude, I know this airport) and then go back. Not unless there was someone I knew was left behind.

  • Vinesh Seeban - 2014-05-28 20:49

Its stupidity like this that gives the fuel to anti gun lobbyists.

  • Ramondé Ashleigh Williams - 2014-05-28 20:50

I cannot understand how people can enjoy mocking this situation! A woman was shot this evening and people find humor in this you people are sick!!! We need to start taking these things a bit more serious and be sensitive about it... REALLY!!!
