Bloemfontein - A Trompsburg man was sentenced to two life imprisonment terms by the Free State High Court on Tuesday for killing a farmer and his wife.

In addition to the two life terms Judge Faan Hancke sentenced Moeketsi Hlaasa, 27, to a further 15 years for housebreaking with intent to commit robbery and 15 years for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

He killed Johannes Fourie, 71, and his wife Cecilia, 72, of the Knoppe farm near Trompsburg, on 9 September 2012.

Hancke said the murders had had an adverse effect on local residents, as there had been three farm killings in the past six years in the area.

The couple was attacked in the kitchen with an axe and dragged to the bedroom, where the attack continued with a spade and a pistol.

Hancke said they sustained multiple head wounds, which indicated they were assaulted over a period of time and then executed.

"There is no indication that this was done in revenge or provocation and not done to put them out of action."

Hancke said the attacks were an indication of inherent malice.

On Monday, Hlaasa's case was separated from that of his two co-accused Nkululeko Mvumvu, 26, and Phineas Mothibi, 29.

The trial of the two men would start in the same court before a different judge on Tuesday.
