Johannesburg - Two men have been arrested for robbing a Spar of R20 000 in Southcrest, Alberton, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Thursday.

"Allegedly R20 000 was taken from the Spar cash registers, as well as from the cash safe," spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said.

The shop's manager alerted police about the robbery around 10:46 on Wednesday morning, Kgasago said.

Two of the seven robbers fled on foot.

They were caught in a bushy area, attempting to run towards City Deep.

One firearm and ammunition were recovered. The firearm's serial number had been filed off.

The pair, aged 33 and 38, would appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court soon on charges of armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Five other robbers escaped in a vehicle and were still at large, Kgasago said.
