Johannesburg - Two wanted rapists were arrested over the weekend in the Soweto area, police said on Sunday.

"One was arrested for raping a 22-year-old girl who was found walking on the street in Lenasia South... on Friday," said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubele.

He said the 36-year-old man was arrested after police detectives received a tip-off about his whereabouts.

Another man, 40, was arrested for allegedly raping his ex-girlfriend last week. Makhubele said the man had gone to his ex-girlfriend's house in Zola, waited until she came home and then raped her.

The two suspected rapists were among 282 people arrested in Zondi, Dobsonville, Protea Glen, Naledi and Lenasia over the weekend.

Six people wanted for various incidents of housebreaking and theft were also arrested, as were others for drunken driving, possession of dagga, stolen property and illegal ammunition.

Four illegal shebeens were closed down; with their liquor confiscated and owners arrested. Fourteen people were arrested for shoplifting goods including perfume, meat and chocolate. Eighty nine people were arrested for drinking in public.

The arrested will appear in various magistrate's courts in Johannesburg on Monday.
