Cape Town – Government needs to account for its role in precipitating the protests against university fee increases, a group of University of Cape Town academics have said.

This was among a list of six demands to be delivered to UCT’s management during a march at the institution on Friday.

The university’s students, staff, workers and management needed to hold talks to resolve the national funding crisis in higher education, the UCT academics said in a statement.

It was posted on UCT academic Pierre de Vos’s blog Constitutionally Speaking.

The list of six demands was drawn up following a meeting of the Academics Union and Black Academics Caucus on Thursday.

They called for the court interdict granted to UCT on Monday, to stop students from protesting and disrupting activities at the institution, to be withdrawn, and charges against students to be dropped.

Management needed to be transparent about the university’s income and expenditure, and budget, to allow staff to understand its long-term financial constraints, they said.

The march from the Jameson Hall to the Bremner Building was expected to start at 11:00.
