Cape Town - The University of Cape Town confirmed in a statement on Thursday that a student had been suspended and would face disciplinary charges following an incident that occurred in an academic department on May 1.

The student is alleged to have intimidated, harassed, threatened and racially abused a member of staff, spokesperson Gerda Kruger said.

"The student has been summoned to appear before a disciplinary tribunal on Monday, May 11."
She said UCT regarded disciplinary matters as confidential.

"It is our practice not to reveal the names of those facing disciplinary charges, nor to reveal any detail relating to the case.

"'We presume innocence until proven guilty. Due process will be followed."
