Johannesburg - The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is ready for this year's registrations, spokesperson Herman Esterhuizen said on Friday.

"UJ plans to enrol 10 500 new first year undergraduate students and has begun its 2014 registrations for senior students," Esterhuizen said.

"Admitted first-year undergraduate applicants will be able to register online from Monday, once they have attended the compulsory first year seminar."

Last year, the university introduced online applications and a toll-free number for people wanting to apply for admission.

It no longer accommodated walk-ins by students wanting to study at the university, Esterhuizen said.

In 2012, the mother of a prospective student died and 20 people were injured in a stampede at the university during its application process.

"More than 66 500 people utilised the system since it was opened last Friday, with more than 7 000 being able to log a formal inquiry with UJ," he said.

The university's call centre had assisted about 65 000 callers since 6 January.

The registration process ends on 31 January.
