Johannesburg - A student was killed and another injured when they were struck by a car in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, on Friday.

"Two students were knocked down by a car at the intersection of Kingsway and University roads in Auckland Park. One student died on the spot while the other was injured," the University of Johannesburg said in a statement.

The injured student was taken to hospital, but discharged later in the day.

The university said the car involved in the incident was being pursued by police at the time.

"The driver of the car is in police custody and the entire matter is currently in the hands of the police."

The university said it was in contact with the students' families.

"The university community is saddened by the untimely death of a student. Our thoughts and prayers go to the student's family and friends," said deputy vice chancellor Tinyiko Maluleke.

"The university also wishes the injured student a speedy recovery, and will provide support to the injured student as well as the family and friends of both the students involved in the accident."
