Durban - The University of KwaZulu-Natal has decided to suspended all academic programmes at its campuses following a violent student protest this week, said spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka.

Seshoka said the decision to suspend the programmes was regrettable considering that it was so close to the end of the academic year.

“University management is currently engaging members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) to understand the causes of the unrest and to address the student grievances.

“Management remains committed to a process of consultation and dialogue with students,” he said.

Seshoka said a full investigation on the acts of misconduct and violence was currently under way.

“Video footage and photographs taken will form part and parcel of the investigation. All perpetrators found to have been involved will face the full might of the university’s disciplinary codes and where necessary, the law.

“One arrest to this end has already been affected. The police, University’s Risk Management Services (RMS) and the Public Order Policing (POP) are present, and are continuing to monitor the situation on all campuses,” said Seshoka.
