Cape Town - Police clashed with protesting students from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) using water cannon to disperse a crowd of about 150 students on Thursday evening.

UWC spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo said the students blocked the road on the corner of Robert Sobukwe Street and Erica Drive.

Students turned cars away as they were attempting to make their way through.

Tyhalibongo said police warned students to move back to the university gates but students refused.

"They were asked to disperse but they refused and police used water cannons," he said.

He said students had now moved back to the university gates.

This follows days of protest by students across the country who are against proposed fee hikes for 2016.

In the past week more than 90 students were arrested by police across the country as the protest intensified.

Police have used teargas, stun grenades and water cannons to disperse students.

More to follow.
