Durban – "Numerous" arrests have been made after robbers and burglars hit the plush resort town of Umhlanga, north of Durban, at the weekend.

Police said there was one case of house robbery and four burglaries and that they were investigating whether the incidents could be linked to one gang.

On Saturday, homes in Tibia Crescent and Sunshine Drive were hit and on Sunday it was the turn of homes in Durnford Avenue and Harrison Place in Umhlanga and Marine View Avenue in Durban North.

“There was no string of house robberies this weekend. There was one house robbery at Tibia Crescent in Umhlanga and the other addresses mentioned were cases of residential burglary,” said police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker.

“We have stepped up patrols and we also have special operations in place. We have a detective field unit that works staggered hours after liaising with the station crime information officer who does a daily analysis of crime,” he said.

“The modus operandi differs in most cases. The two burglaries that were reported at Harrison Drive and Durnford Avenue were an exception. Normally suspects come with their own or stolen vehicles and in this instance they stole the vehicles that were on the premises.

"Numerous arrests have been made," Naicker said.
