Pretoria - The national police commissioner’s office has confirmed that a probe has been launched into a crime intelligence unit undercover agent who was spotted at the fraud trial of the unit’s former chief financial officer.

Solly Lazarus was in court last month with co-accused Hein Barnard for allegedly using a front company to siphon money from the unit, reported Eyewitness News.

EWN said when Lazarus arrived in court, an undercover officer was seen carrying bags and files for his legal team.

National police said it was investigating why the officer was at Lazarus’s trial.

The controversial unit faced allegations of torture, murder, bogus crimes and cover-ups in July 2013. The allegations emerged in a dispute by Colonel Johan Roos at the Labour Court.

It was alleged that Lazarus faked two hijackings in which at least R1m in cash was stolen from him, reported the Mail & Guardian.

It was also claimed that a "special crime intelligence unit" created by Lazarus allegedly tortured and drowned a suspect in Booysens, Johannesburg.

The Labour Court ruled in April last year that Roos be re-employed by the police, said the Times.
