Unforgivable security lapse at Baragwanath: DA

Johannesburg - The security company at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital must be replaced, the Democratic Alliance said on Friday.

"The security company at this hospital, Mabotwane, must be fired and replaced with a competent company," said DA spokesperson Jack Bloom.

This comes after a nurse at the hospital was stabbed by her boyfriend on Thursday.

Last weekend, a mentally ill man stabbed several people, including an intern doctor, in the same hospital.

Bloom said there were security problems at other hospitals in Gauteng and all the security contracts had to be reviewed.

"We must get good value for the more than R150m that we spend every year on hospital security in Gauteng," he said.

Management at the Baragwanath hospital had to be held accountable for the "unforgivable" security lapses.

Well said DA! We have to insure hospitals are a place of healing and safety... taxpayers cannot afford the governments wasteful expenditure on nonfunctional companies.

There was a robbery and near rape a few days ago at a DA-town hospital. Why are they quiet about that? Petty politics on an important isssue

Things like that shouldn't happen, South Africa is a violent country, what's sort of a man stabs a woman?

The same type of man that kills defenceless people on farms without thinking because he has no education and never cared to get one. Now, his road in parliament is laid out in front of him. I believe murder is the best entry qualification for ANCYL members.

If the DA was in power, l dont think that l was going to be dissapointed at all, they are so well organized.

This is silly. The DA is silly. The patient was mentally unstable, the doctors should've have picked up on that and put him in the psych ward where he would've been under the correct supervision... As for the nurse who was stabbed by her boyfriend, I've never been frisked at ANY hospital when entering as a visitor, be it public or private. I'm not at all sure what the DA is suggesting here.
