Thohoyandou - A student accused of four murders, a rape and an assault in and around the University of Venda is expected to apply for bail in the Thohoyandou magistrate's court on Thursday. The Food and Science Technology student, who cannot be named until he has formally pleaded, was arrested in July.

He faces sixteen charges including murder, attempted murder, rape, aggravated robbery, and kidnapping.

Local Civic Association chairperson Azwinndini Magoro expressed shock at the student's arrest. "We are still shocked, we thought it could be a total stranger, but it was someone who [we] regard as one of our own." The student was arrested on July 15, four days after allegedly raping and killing Brenda Ndove, 45, who was a cleaner at the university.

Her body was found dumped between lecture rooms and a clinic.

Another woman, Livhuwani Mbodi, 22, was found dead on the university's premises in March.

A student, Shudufhadzo Sandy Thagisa, 20, was hospitalised after she was assaulted and robbed in May. She has since been discharged from hospital.

The bodies of Alice Mashau and Tshililo Ndouaged, aged eight and nine respectively, were found next to a cemetery in Golgotha, near the university. They were believed to have been kidnapped from their schools. Community organisations were protesting outside the court, demanding the accused not be granted bail.
