Vavi rape accuser withdraws 'grievance'

2013-07-29 14:13

Johannesburg - A woman who claimed she had been raped by Zwelinzima Vavi has withdrawn her "grievance", the Cosatu general secretary tweeted on Monday.

Vavi said the woman withdrew the claim just two hours into an internal disciplinary hearing.

“Thanks to so many who supported my family,” Vavi tweeted.

He later tweeted: “I won't do interviews on the statement - tired - spending afternoon with my family.”

Vavi has admitted to having sex with the woman, who was employed by Cosatu, and claimed she later tried to extort R2m from him.

He denied raping her, and said the sex was consensual.

However, she brought a complaint of sexual harassment against him.

The woman said earlier on Monday that she was not in a position to talk about the hearing.

"I am not going to talk about it [the hearing] for now, I cannot answer any of your questions," she said.

So THAT's why you dont have a woman in your life Polio Donkey?? that makes sense now

      Bheki Dladla - 2013-07-29 14:50

      Gary Guy - 2013-07-29 15:02

I wonder how much the ANC paid her to just throw some dirt so that some of it sticks and then withdraw the charge. Watch her bank balance closely!!

      Poloyatonki Kgosi - 2013-07-29 15:03

Bheki Dladla ... Why o le dom so? Tota o sematla straight..

      Mzamo Boylane - 2013-07-29 15:08

@Poloyatonki...That's so immature of you to generalise like that, imagine if someone can say all man are rapist. slow down boy!!!!!!!

      Eish.....no more hard feelings!

      Poloyatonki Kgosi - 2013-07-29 15:33

Chreamz... Money plays a major rule in a relationship.

      Punungwe - 2013-07-29 15:38

my comment should have read 'That does NOT let Vavi off the hook. He is a married man who bedded a married colleague using his political influence and power to score the hit.'

      Thabang Bonang - 2013-07-29 15:43

Many questions left unanswered. - Was it the first time Vavi did her? - What did she think of His government size? - Would she recommend him for other ladies in the office? - How did she get the job at the airport where she met Vavi? - Did she and her husband ever made money previously from her previous screwers so that she can be silent?

      Simon Berry - 2013-07-29 16:02

A fake rape allegation should be a serious issue with the state of real rapes we have in SA! This woman should not get away with it...

      John Nel - 2013-07-29 16:06

So Comrade Vavi, now walk your talk. You are telling other political leaders all about ethics and being morally upright. You may not have raped her, but you crossed the line by sleeping with a subordinate. You have brought COSATU into disrepute. So show us the way, lead by example. Resign!!!

      Sandra Rennie - 2013-07-30 13:47

Thabang Bonang Thoroughly enjoyed your post ! Best ever ! I think you hit the nail on the head ! Smart !

  • Mpilo Ndwndwe - 2013-07-29 14:16

she will have to explain sometime as to who is she working with in dragging down Mr vavi's name.

      Jacqui Daane Van Rensburg - 2013-07-29 14:20

Mpilo Ndwndwe. When Vavi forogt that he was a married man, whose wife was about to give birth to twins, he did all the dragging down himself.

      Nhamo Dzenyika - 2013-07-29 14:22

Lesson to Vavi and others - when in leadership position, check your every step because the consequences can be too ghastly to contemplate. Seems like he has survived this one!!

      Mpilo Ndwndwe - 2013-07-29 14:26

@ Jacqui, in my understanding they both married, besides they have their partners to deal with that case of cheating. i am only worried about the recordings. who recorded the conversation and why?

      Johnson Smith - 2013-07-29 14:27

Vavi was talking about people like you @Jacqui when he said too many people are judgmental. I'm happy this cloud seems to have passed him.

      Foc Us - 2013-07-29 14:38

I think she got her price!! Maybe Vavi is paying it off in installments

      Son OfSoil - 2013-07-29 14:40

@Jacqui, you are so subjective in your opinions. Typical of an atheist.

      Foc Us - 2013-07-29 14:43

@SonofSoil .... thats the REASON it is called someone's OPINION .... it is supposed to be subjective by the pure definition

      Erna - 2013-07-29 14:44

Jacqui - rape is bad, but a woman who screams rape to get out of a situation, is worse. And Vavi wasn't the only married person in the relationship - she is married too. Why blame it all on the man!

      Gift Mogiftana - 2013-07-29 14:52

Vavi has always preached about how he's against corruption, he still managed to get this girl a job without going through proper channels and overpaid her with the same money from the union members that he's "fighting" for. Whoever she was working with to tarnish Vavi's image, it's mission accomplished for them, he might be free from the rape charges but they have exposed the hypocrisy in his statements. The only noble thing for him to do is just resign with the bit of dignity he still has from at least admitting to sleep with her

      Son OfSoil - 2013-07-29 14:52

@Foc, true that, a little bit of impartiality and objectivity doesn't hurt. It assists not be seen as stubborn narrow minded fool.

      Vuyokazi Balani - 2013-07-30 08:40

cant wait to hear the names of those ppl

  • Riana Bruyns-Lombard - 2013-07-29 14:17

Did they settle out side of procedure??

      Sheilan - 2013-07-29 14:23

I highly doubt that actually. I don't believe one second Vavi would pay her.

      c0l1ard - 2013-07-29 14:31

Could only be as things were most properly not going his way.

      Son OfSoil - 2013-07-29 14:42

The woman's "lies tank" ran empty, blame it on the constant hikes in fuel price.

      Themba Mhlongo - 2013-07-30 05:10

      what the hell?

  • kalabafazi - 2013-07-29 14:18

Some body needs to sit this woman down and tell her the story of the boy who "cried wolf". But it's nice to see the leaders behaving responsibly.

  • Jacqui Daane Van Rensburg - 2013-07-29 14:19

    How much was she paid?.

      Son OfSoil - 2013-07-29 14:43

so true Clint, what a "woman" she is cant even comment im not surprised at all

      Johnson Smith - 2013-07-29 14:28

Exactly. Stupid greedy woman who cries rape as it pleases her

      Gift Mogiftana - 2013-07-29 14:54

  • CraigJoseph - 2013-07-29 14:26

Women like these who cry rape and the allegations turn out to be false should do jail time themselves. These actions have a direct negative impact for all women who have been victims of rape and abuse. I'm not however saying that Vavi's extra-marital affair should be condoned in any way.

      DeAndre Sosa - 2013-07-29 14:38

      Roger that!!!

      Godfrey Albertyn - 2013-07-29 14:41

She withdrew the grievance, that doesn't make the allegations false. They hadn't been tested.

  • Sthembiso Simon Mbele - 2013-07-29 14:27

We all knew that this was a sep up by the people who r against the revolution of fighting corruption and clean governance, we even know that the top leader of our movement are in a campaign to unseat Vavi just because he was uncertain about supporting Zuma in Mangaung

  • Motlogelwa Seloana - 2013-07-29 14:27

    Cover up.

  • Shuma Nkuna - 2013-07-29 14:29

The term consensual is somehow vague, are we sure she didn't consent just because she was trying to keep her job? Let's be honest, vavi is not 1 of the handsome guys I've seen, and the everage 26-30 year old woman wouldn't say they find hin atractive or hot. Are these the kind of leaders we want? Sleeping with our poor sisters coz they r in power, shame on u

      Florence Booi - 2013-07-29 15:59

@ Shuma when a man holds you against your will I don't care how scared you are as a woman the first word that comes out of ur mouth is "Stop" and the culprit becomes more aggresive the next step you try and push them away now this is where it starts cos now they come back with that force and the only weapon you can use is to SCREAM she did nothing

  • Morwa Motho Selebi - 2013-07-29 14:30

  • Qaqambile Harold Mtshingila - 2013-07-29 14:34

I hope Mail and Guardian get to the details of what exactly took place here. I would love to know the truth here (whether the lady was scheming or bowed out of fear or threats).

      Bibi Shakwane - 2013-07-30 08:34

I agree, the Mail and Guardian is possibly the only publication that will reveal the story behind the story in due course

  • Ntaja Nemakhavhani - 2013-07-29 14:35

Shame on u Jacqueline Phooko, this is an insult to serious rape victims. If he did rape u, so why did you decide to take advantage of the situation and demanded 2mil. If you really cared about other rape victims 'like you said on your grievance dated the 15th July' you were gonna come forward immediately in order to prevent this from happening to next person. GREED!!! I have gone through your conversations with ZV and all I see is you: 1.trying to milk out money from him including visits to therapist totaling to R8000 per visit. 2.Claiming that there are people after you because you work for ZV. Who are you?? COSATU has been in existence for long and am sure it will be ZV that they will threaten and not you. Moral of the story - married men must try to keep their pants zipped at all times, else u gonna land in s##t like this. Hope you'll have learned.

      Kagiso Justice Sedumedi - 2013-07-29 19:23

It's just so true, she was probably pressured to safe COSATU's name and her job. Vavi is now excited but surely, the whole issue here is when he of sleeps around with married woman, 2 days before the birth of his child, without a condom, on duty time and place bought with hard earned monies of the poor working class! Sies!!!!

  • MackBolan - 2013-07-29 14:35

And I thought women don't make false rape accusations, silly me. It will be more interesting to see whether she will be punished in any significant way. Or walk away unscathed, playing her victim role to the hilt replete with snot, tears and the obligatory YOU magazine article and subsequent book deal. Laughable.

  • Skeem Sa Jonny Walker - 2013-07-29 14:35

Now she has to tell us who paid her for making this allegations.

  • Erna - 2013-07-29 14:36

  • Ponani Petunia Makhubele - 2013-07-29 14:37

I'm an african and I have a view that the office used for chicken sex must get some cleansing rituals, cosatu members r running to amcu due to such acts .vavi must just disappear from public, his acting victim is an embarasement to women I suspect she is a private prostitute who is used by her acting husband who in reality may.be his pimp I do not understand y would a husband choose payment of millions instead of divorcing the wife, south african men must march to court to demand that vavi must be arrested, vavi undermimes men...few years ago he took a woman who is now his wife from a popcru member whom he paid the husband off..that's insult to men.vavi can't just keep taking women and pay off their husbands...vavi has insulted workers who trusted him with that office...we are not saint ourselves but he should have known better and book a hotel...or he must have a spare house which he would use to satisfy his huge sexual appetite...I'm disturbed by all this

      Edwin Todzis - 2013-07-29 14:46

Relax, Calm down, breath-in and out....The country need Vavi......most of us do it in the dark anyway.....think e-toll

  • Ayanda Blaque Sithole - 2013-07-29 14:38

cde Vavi you on the otherside should continue with the case of extortion because she has already damaged your image, and has put serious doubt on our minds, we now question your leadership although we mindful that the enemy will do whatever it takes to bring you down.

  • Godfrey Mahlayeye - 2013-07-29 14:38

No wonder she didn't report Zwelinzima Vavi to the police! It seems she knew she was going to withdraw her grievance against him. And this will make people to always think if that was rape or consensual sexual intercourse.

  • Ms M. - 2013-07-29 14:38

Shame poor women must have been intimidated...2 hours into the hearing. It is still a man's world.

      Son OfSoil - 2013-07-29 15:07

2 hours is very long to defend lies when you are cross-examined by a clever person.

  • Thabo Kgoebane - 2013-07-29 14:39

It's people like this woman who makes it possible for rapist to escape the wrath of the law. U don't accuse somebody and come an withdraw a charge. I think Vavi should continue with his extortion charge and not to later to withdraw it later. This is disheartening.

  • Alfred Baloyi - 2013-07-29 14:39

Vavi should be ashamed, your family is ashamed i am sure, how come you fall for this kind of thing...consensual or not, Vavi your image, credibility and stature has regressed deeply.... next time you have sex with someone other than your wife, consensual or not, remember you raping the state.......

This 26 year old woman must be ashamed of herself. Sies...if only she could have seen our faces when we heard of this "rape claim"..the personal details of her affair with an older man were a bit too much for some of us...and now she withdraws....it's true this is a set back in fight against rape..I hope you withdrawing was not part of the original plan....come to think of it maybe we should check on you next year to see if you had not become the tenderpreneur.

      Ike Hlalele - 2013-07-29 15:05

Add to your comment which is a fact, Vavi has made love to her, after recruiting her from SAA. How did Vavi hired her? Why Vavi has laid extortion charges against her? If she's pregnant or infected by Aids after such act will Vavi be responsible?

      Ms M. - 2013-07-29 15:14

@John Smith, no I am not jealous. I have no wish of being sexed/raped by an aging male that boost his ego in such a way. I was stating fact. All I am saying is that he had sex in the office whilst he should have been working. @Ike Hlallele, yes these are the questions that he has to answer

      Son OfSoil - 2013-07-29 15:44

@Ike and Ms M, using a condom is not solely a responsibility of a man. If Vavi is infected with Aids, will she be responsible? add that question to your list.

  • Kgomotso Tso Direro - 2013-07-29 14:46

I think It was just plot to oust Zwelinzima Vavi from Cosatu. The ANC and the Government are really trying to bring those who are against them down.

      Ms M. - 2013-07-29 14:51

He admitted to sleeping with her in the office...how is this a plot?

  • Crezelda Fleeurs - 2013-07-29 14:48

wow she though she will make money , why she never reported it when they were kissing in the offices she allowed it to happen, and he came clean he had an affair and why she never reported it the first time !!!!!!!!!!!!! Mr Vavi i will lay the red carpet out for u and i gave my heart to your wife that stood by u!

  • Andile Mehlonyosi - 2013-07-29 14:48

Her story proved to have all the hallmarks of a fabrication. Good for her to save her and her family from further embarassment before the COSATU tribunal and the country by withdrawing her accusations against Vavi.

  • Mapula Dikgale - 2013-07-29 14:49

I feel sad for the lady as she was taken for a ride by whoever convinced her to cry rape in July after having sex with Vavi in January. Politics are not for the faint hearted, she was not told of the humiliation she'll be causing herself. The smear campaign against Vavi was not well orchestrated. I don't condone the extra marital affair, I just want to say hope you've learned your lesson Vavi and you should remind yourself that you're wife is growing up and so are you! Young beautiful women will always be there but never lose sight of who you are. Your wife is paying a hefty price of being supportive whether she likes it or not as you've put her on the SPOTLIGHT. Maybe the affair ended in January?
