Johannesburg - Veteran journalist Aida Parker died in a Johannesburg nursing home on Friday at the age of 84.

Parker, who was born in Atherstone in southern England on October 24, 1918 had a stroke in August last year and moved to St Michael's care centre in Weltevreden Park.

She began her career in journalism with the Argus group, publishers of The Star, and from there moved to The Citizen where she wrote a regular column which reflected her conservative political views.

Parker was a determined personality which often brought her into conflict with the equally strong and determined Citizen editor Johnny Johnson.

In April 1985 she launched the Aida Parker newsletter which was distributed on a subscription list around South Africa and the World and she was actively involved in its production up to the time of her death.

The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
