Victims 'thrilled' about rapist's suicide

2013-07-26 12:22

Johannesburg - Prosecutors have spoken of their bitter disappointment at the suicide of a serial child rape accused in Johannesburg.

Sifiso Makhubo, 42, hanged himself in his prison cell with a torn grey blanket, The Star reported. He was facing 122 charges of rape, kidnapping, robbery, murder and attempted murder.

The case was expected to set legal precedents because it was the first time in South Africa that a rapist who knew his HIV-positive status had been charged with attempted murder.

He infected several of his child victims with HIV.

“We had a duty to prove that he was well aware of his status and that he was well informed and knew how HIV is transmitted and, therefore, prove that he did it intentionally. He knew of his condition and he intentionally transmitted it to his victims,” said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Louw.

Investigating officer Detective Mokopu Maedi expressed his sadness about Makhubo’s suicide, saying: “This case took my life. My wife gave birth a month ago and I couldn’t take leave because I wanted to finish this.”

However, prosecutor Maro Papachristoforou described how many victims were thrilled when they heard the news that their tormentor had killed himself.

The matter has officially been struck off the roll.

he's on the highway to hell

      Tuco Angeleyes - 2013-07-26 14:03

Why are prosecutors dismayed when the b@stard did us all a favor by not having to finance a cushy prison jail term. They must burn his body

      Debbie du Plessis - 2013-07-26 20:21

Prosecutor is sad cos 122 charges & 1000 years life sentence given would have looked good on his CV ... I am glad the S**T is dead! 1) He is a rapist & I despise rapists 2) he is not wasting Tax Payers good money - i don't believe in Good Money to support Evil! ... now Zuma can do us a favour too!

  • Toofaan Monsoon - 2013-07-26 12:33

Ok, on the assumption that he is guilty, I'm happier with him dead too. Just hope that he suffered a little like his victims did before he died.

      lacrimosewolf - 2013-07-26 23:04

He was a selfish person until the end. If his 'unwanted tendencies' had bothered him at all a) he would never have acted on them b) having acted once he would have killed himself. No, on and on and on he went. He only killed himself because he was caught and sorry for *himself*. Even in death he gave all his victims, their families and society a great big F-U. Narcissistic to the end

  • Lebakeng Nchaupe - 2013-07-26 12:36

    minus one many to go

  • Rohin Jadin - 2013-07-26 12:36

saves the tax payer alot of money. That is my opinion is the biggest admission of guilt.

      TheJaydedKing - 2013-07-26 12:40

I believe they should leave a rope hanging from the sealing in all prison cells to assist with admissions of guilt.

      IAnon Ym - 2013-07-26 14:33

      @TheJaydedKing - now you're talking -

  • JournoSergio - 2013-07-26 12:36

I can see where the prosecutors and investigators are coming from though - probably took them months or even years of hard work and then the guy just ends himself anyways. At least the monster is gone.

  • jeremy thorpe - 2013-07-26 12:36

There's been a lot of nonsense about this guy having "taken the coward's way out" and "escaping justice" by killing himself. As the article says, the victims are probably delighted.....he's gone now and they won't have to sit through a court case. And the taxpayers are happy because they won't have to fund the courtcase - or many years jail time for this monster. Probably the only unhappy people are no doubt the lawyers who won't be making any money out of the case....

      Avremel Niselow - 2013-07-26 13:20

He knew what happens to child rapists in jail so he took the cowards way out.

      Frans Van Der Merwe - 2013-07-26 14:55

Just a shame he had to destroy government property (the blanket) to commit suicide.... He should have drown himself in the toilet bowl!

      Johnny Lamont - 2013-07-27 07:16

Jeremy, you always struck me as a knowledgeable person but this one you got wrong. This type of case is handled by either an in-house lawyer of the Legal Aid board or they appoint a private advocate who has to work at very low fees it is a type of community service private advocates do.

  • Bessie Motha - 2013-07-26 12:42

I pray that the victims may find peace and be able to heal through this process

      Keith Recore - 2013-07-26 12:49

yes Bessie and the state maintains a means for the victims access to care and treatment, for life if necessary.

  • Giuliano Loddo - 2013-07-26 12:43

hope it was an assisted suicide....

  • Lindy Jeffery - 2013-07-26 12:50

They should all commit suicide....will the country a lot of money!!

      Azande Futhi - 2013-07-26 14:21

      I fully agree with that.

  • Andrew Selous - 2013-07-26 12:55

'Thrilled' is all that counts now. He's NEVER coming back now.

  • Egler Bare - 2013-07-26 12:59

Am glad he is dead. Imagine if all criminals were going to end up this way, wow what a safe country it would be. No R500 bail, no time wasted goin to court to prove something so obvious and no tax payers' money wasted on such a pathetic excuse of a human being. Yipeeee

  • mapepaki - 2013-07-26 12:59

Good riddance to bad rubbish, he did to himself what justice should have done hang the rubbish. Now rot in hell. His victims I pray, will gain strength and eventually lead a fulfilled life.
