Village choir singer jailed for rape

Johannesburg - A North West man was jailed for 20 years by the Itsoseng Regional Court on Thursday for raping a 6-year-old girl, police said.

Captain Pelonomi Makau said Peter Monoto, 23, raped the girl at his friend's house on April 29 last year.

He said Monoto and the girl's father sang in the same choir in their village.

On the night of the rape, Monoto went to the girl's house and asked for her father. Her parents were not there and only she and her two siblings, aged seven and nine, were at home.

Monoto told the girl to accompany him to her parents.

"The victim did not resist going with the suspect, as she knew and trusted him," Makau said.

"It [is] alleged that instead of going to where they were supposed to go, the suspect took the victim to his friend's house and raped her."

After he raped her, he took her back to her house and left her outside.

"An hour later the victim's parents arrived and found their daughter sitting outside the house crying," Makau said.

"The victim explained to her parents what happened. Her parents took her to the police station and she was taken to the local hospital, where the doctor confirmed [the] rape."

He said DNA samples were taken and they tested positively for Monoto.
