Pietermaritzburg - At least 25 people were stabbed and a woman raped at a KwaZulu-Natal music festival meant to encourage responsible behaviour during the festive season, a report said on Tuesday.

Paramedics at the Nyusi Volume Music Festival said people had been stabbed with knives or glass bottles, reported the Times. One woman who had been raped was also taken to hospital, said medical workers.

The festivals organisers, the Ladysmith municipality and Ukhozi FM, denied the violence and said security officials only reported two “incidents” at the event.

According to the Ladysmith Gazette, 36 people had to be treated in hospital after the weekend festival which was held at the Indoor Sports Complex.

Rubbish was said to be lying everywhere and the grounds were only cleared at 04:30 on Sunday morning.

One festival-goer told the Times he had bent down to help someone who had been stabbed when he himself was attacked.
