Cape Town - A volunteer fire-fighter died while helping extinguish a mountain fire near Kommetjie, a City of Cape Town official said on Thursday.

Andrew Jantjies, 44, collapsed on the scene on Wednesday night and two off-duty doctors in the area attended to him, safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said.

He was declared dead on arrival at the False Bay Hospital in Fish Hoek.

Jantjies was an attorney and had been with the Fish Hoek Disaster Management Volunteer Corps for seven years.

He was skilled in fire-fighting, first aid and traffic control.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

"The community and volunteers have lost a great talent, but we salute Mr Jantjies and pay tribute to him for the contribution that he made to uplifting the community and helping those in need," Smith said.

"I wish his family peace and comfort in their time of mourning."
