Johannesburg - A boy drowned and another one went missing on Sunday after they were swept away by a river on a farm in Worcester, Western Cape paramedics said.

The boy and his friend were trying to cross the river at a shallow point when they got swept away, ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said.

"Emergency workers were still searching for the missing boy. Both boys were believed to be 9-years-old."

Banks said the two were last seen together before they attempted to cross the river.

"The boy who was found floating in the river was declared dead on the scene," he said.
