Cape Town - A Worcester detective constable was arrested on Friday morning for allegedly trying to persuade a complainant to drop criminal charges, Western Cape police said.

The 32-year-old officer, attached to the Worcester police station, was charged with corruption and defeating the ends of justice, said Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut.

He said she had been assigned to investigate an attempted murder charge against a member of the JCY gang, which took place a year ago.

"During her interaction with the complainant, a monetary reward was also offered to him and she also colluded with the mother of the suspect who at times accompanied her to the complainant," he said.

Traut said the 56-year-old mother allegedly intimidated witnesses not to testify in the case against her son.

The mother was also arrested on Friday morning and charged with intimidation.

The two will appear in the Worcester Magistrate's Court on Monday.
