Johannesburg - A man died when he drove off a cliff between Bakoven and Oudekraal in the Western Cape on Friday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

"It appears that the vehicle may have left the road travelling in the direction of Hout Bay before plunging over the cliff into the surf, possibly in the early hours of this [Friday] morning," NSRI station commander Bruce Davidson said in a statement.

The man was found trapped inside the vehicle, which was lying among rocks in shallow water.

"No additional people were found in or around the vehicle and it's suspected that there was just one occupant in the vehicle," said Davidson.

The cause of the accident was not known and police have opened an inquest into the incident.

In a separate incident, a fisherman was injured when he fell off the Knysna Lagoon train bridge in the Western Cape on Friday, said NSRI station commander Jerome Simonis.

"Our NSRI Knysna volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft JAYTEE III and on arrival found the EMS [Emergency Management Services] paramedics treating the man for a head injury on the lagoon banks below the train bridge," said Simonis.

The man was taken to hospital for further treatment.
