Ventersdorp - Water has been restored across Ventersdorp municipality in the North West over the weekend after a disruption last week, the municipality said on Monday.

Gideon Moremedi, the municipality's technical manager, said a transformer blew within the pumping system on Thursday, but it was replaced on Friday.

"Water has been restored to the entire municipality as of Monday. It came back late yesterday [Sunday]," he said.

"We are pumping the water into the system and the transformer has gone out. It would take time to replace the transformer. The reason being, these are expensive."

He said the municipality's water system did not have spare capacity, with water being used on a continual basis. When the transformer required replacement, the municipality had to shut off the water to do so. While the transformer was being replaced, the water within the system was used up.

"Our common practice has been, if such an anomaly occurs, to close the water at 23:00 so we can fill up the reservoirs," Moremedi said.

Once the transformer was replaced, time was needed to allow the reservoirs to fill up before the water was switched back on, which happened on Sunday.

Moremedi said the municipality were doing everything they could to address the problem.
