UNANSWERED calls to the uMgungundlovu Municipality have led to thousands of litres of water being wasted when a mains pipe burst in Howick this week.

Merrivale resident Peter Etherington said water “shot up” to almost a metre high when a pipe burst on his driveway in Holiday Road.

“We couldn’t get out of our driveway as the amount of water gushing out was so high. We called the municipality at 7 am then again at 9 am but no one answered,” he said.

Etherington said when his call was eventually picked up by the municipality, “someone said they would report the matter and send people to fix it”.

He said hours went by with water gushing out, damaging his tarred driveway, and no one arrived.

“I don’t mind the driveway being damaged as that area does fall on municipal land. My biggest issue is the fact that we are suffering a water shortage crisis, but our municipality seem okay with wasting water.”

Etherington said he didn’t expect a complete repair of the pipe but the municipality “should have sent someone to shut the water off”.

The water gushed out of the ground until 3.30 pm when Etherington “eventually managed to get through to a supervisor”.

“I feel there should be a law that the responsible people should be charged with the theft of a natural resource if a problem like this is not attended to,” said Etherington.

He said he is now left with the “mess” on his driveway because the municipality “could not finish the job that night as the digger ran out of fuel”.
