Durban - The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday said it would rally behind provincial chairperson Senzo Mchunu should he retain his position following the 8th Provincial Conference at the weekend.

This was in spite of the provincial ANCYL putting its weight behind provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala as its preferred candidate.

Speaking at a press briefing in Durban, ANC Youth League provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo said the league, which has openly declared its support for Zikalala to emerge as provincial chairperson, would not be disappointed if Mchunu wins.

"There is no room for disappointment because the ANC will be the one that emerges on Sunday. There is no need for us to be disappointed and should the impossible happen and Senzo gets elected, we will rally behind him and support him."

Sabelo said it was highly unlikely that Mchunu would emerge victorious because of the overwhelming support Zikalala had received from various regions.

"Senzo will only be elected in a dream, not at this conference. If we wake up from a bad dream and he has been elected, he will remain as the premier of KZN until 2019.

"We are not going to review his term at the conferen... We have never called for Senzo to be removed as premier, we will continue to support him as the premier because he is a member of the ANC in the province...

"I love Premier Senzo Mchunu, the ANCYL loves the premier, he is our own comrade, but because there is democracy and our internal democracy, we are allowed to say that this [Zikalala] is our preferred candidate," said Sabelo.
