Cape Town - A large "freak" wave has pummelled swimmers and beach goers and killed one person on Wedge Beach in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Rescue Services say.

Paramedics and rescue agencies responded at 16:30. Paramedics say they assessed about 40 patients for minor injuries, and another died despite efforts to resuscitate him.

All the affected people decided not to go to the hospital after assessment.

The National Sea Rescue Institute says that it was a tidal surge that caused 150 people to be swept into the sea.

Wedge Beach is a popular surfing spot located to the right of the beachfront's new pier in Durban. The name of the beach is related to surfing, as with most of Durban's beach names.
