Johannesburg - Operating theatres at Leratong Hospital on the West Rand have been upgraded and are ready for use, the Gauteng health department said on Friday.

Spokesperson Simon Zwane said in a statement that the theatres had been opened "much to the relief of many patients who rely on this hospital for medical care".

The theatres were closed for about six months during renovations and during this time patients were referred to other hospitals. No emergency cases were affected, Zwane said.

All eight hospital theatres received a new air conditioning system, and in two theatres the vinyl sheet flooring was replaced.

In order to comply with theatre quality standards, ceramic tiles were installed in three scrubbing rooms.

"In addition to the revamping of the theatres a new uninterrupted power supply was installed as a contingency for power outages," Zwane said.

To clear the backlog of non-emergency operations, the surgical and orthopaedic units would each use two theatres, instead of one each.

"The refurbished theatres will also be of assistance to patients of Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital, which is a smaller facility," Zwane said.
